A Campaign to Abolish the Electoral College
The League launched our "One Person One Vote" campaign to activate voters around abolishing the Electoral College and building a truly representative electoral system.
The Electoral College is a racist relic designed to take power away from the people. Just as we did during the women's suffrage movement, we're fighting for a democracy that is truly by and for the people.
SCOTUS Opens the Door for Racial Discrimination in Redistricting
The Supreme Court of the US overturned a lower court's ruling that South Carolina's congressional map was an unconstitutional racial gerrymander.
This decision raises the bar for voters who seek to challenge unjust racial gerrymanders.
The Leagues of the US and South Carolina participated in amicus briefs in this case. We will continue to fight all forms of racial discrimination in voting, including racial gerrymandering.
Defending Civic Engagement
The League of Women Voters of Alabama and partners filed a lawsuitchallenging SB1, a bill that would criminalize the act of assisting voters with absentee ballot applications.
Meanwhile, voting rights advocates in Florida celebrated as a federal judge permanently blocked a severely restrictive provision of Florida's anti-voter law, SB7050, that targeted nonpartisan civic engagement groups. LWV of Florida and partners challenged this law in 2023.
Partnerships for Voter Empowerment
The League and its one-stop-shop for election information, VOTE411.org, cemented several meaningful collaborations in May! These included work with the American Library Association, the Washington Mystics, Macy's, Inc., and Microsoft.
